News
THIS WEEK IN THIRD GRADE

DATE:  August 18 – 22

MEMORY:  Memory will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  No memory on Tuesday this week.  2 Corinthians 5:17 is the memory for Thursday.  Memory schedule for August and September is in this Friday folder.

SPELLING:  Pretest will be on Wednesday and test on Friday.  If students get 100% on Wednesday, they do not need to take the Friday test.  This week’s words are:  crayon, friend, friendship, Amber Brown, passport, third, grade, August, September, diorama, messy, fraction, chewing gum, spelling, moving, China.

READING:  I have been reading the book Amber Brown is Not a Crayon.  We have been discussing friendship.  We will begin our first reading story in our book, called The Lost and Found later in the week.  Our first unit is called “Off to Adventure”.  Our reading stories will usually begin on Monday and be completed with a quiz on Friday.  However, our first two stories will be completed by the Friday after Labor Day.  Please see the note below about the required reading logs each month.

ENGLISH:   A review: distinguishing between complete sentences and fragments; writing complete sentences; identifying statements, commands, exclamations, and using correct punctuation; identifying subjects of sentences.  We have a hard back English book this year.

RELIGION:  We began with discussing friendship and looking at friends in the Bible.  We will continue searching Bible verses that show what a true friend is.  Then we will begin our religion book with the story of “Creation” and “Adam and Eve in Paradise”.  What an awesome God we have, who has created all things and continues to preserve them.

MATH:  Exciting!!!!  We have a new math series and third graders have a huge textbook.  We began the year taking an inventory test (to see where we are and to plan where we are going)!  We will spend several days in the beginning pages of our book in the Back to School lessons.  Later in the week we will begin Unit 1, “Place Value and Money”.  Chapter one is on place value.  New vocabulary is:  ordinal numbers, digits, word form, standard form, and expanded form.

SCIENCE:  Vocabulary:  cell, leaf, nutrient, plant, root, stem.  Learn how plants use their parts to meet their needs (p. A4-A13).

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Review geography skills.  Vocabulary:  North Pole, South Pole, equator, continent, ocean, map symbol, map key, cardinal direction, compass rose, locator, landform map, and grid map.

OTHER THINGS TO REMEMBER:

READING LOGS will be required each month.  They will be worth 20 reading points.  August will only be worth 10 points!  Each child has a reading calendar in their Friday folders to record their minutes read each day.  400 reading minutes is required each month.  This is an average of 20 minutes for 20 of the days of the month.  AUGUST’s required reading minutes are 200 minutes.  Reading of textbooks and other books is OK.

Please bring a picture for our bulletin board.  Thanks!  We will also be using pump hand sanitizers before lunch and when using the computers.  Any donations of sanitizers would be appreciated.

Our first PE class will be on Tuesday, August 19th. Third graders may bring a Hope

t-shirt to wear for gym.  Gym shoes will be kept at school.  We have PE on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12:30 – 1:00.

We have had a wonderful beginning.  Jesus is with us now and He will be with us all year and all of our lives.  Begin boldly, believing Jesus’ Good News, blessed by God!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

IN HIS SERVICE, MRS. HANEBUTT
